The Student Petroleum Society (SPS) is a student ran club through the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). The club holds a main objective of bridging the gap between students in various Petroleum programs to industry professionals. This is achieved through technical presentations, on site tours, mentorship opportunities, and networking events. The SPS is also in collaboration with other associations in the industry including the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and Land and Energy Management Association of Canada (LEMAC). Through these initiatives, the SPS creates real opportunities for students to grow, not only technically, but professionally and personally.

How the SPS Started
In the 1959–1960 school year, the Provincial Institute of Technology & Art (PITA, now SAIT) launched its Petroleum Technology program with an initial cohort of 22 students. That same year, these students formed the Association of Petroleum Technologists with the support of staff sponsor Mr. A. P. Workun. Building on this early foundation of student engagement, SAIT went on to register the third Society of Petroleum Engineers student chapter in Canada in 1992.
